Shimogamo Jinja or Lower Kamo Shrine is one of the Kamo Shrines, which are two of the most important temples in Kyoto, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as one of the 17 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
The 2,000-year old shrine even predate the establishment of Kyoto as Japan's capital way back 794.
It is located in the intersection of Takano and Kamo rivers, and surrounded by preserved trees up to 600 years old.

The shrine can be reached via Demachi-Yanagi Station on the Keihan Line. Alternatively, you can ride the Kyoto City Bus no.4 bound to Kamigamojinja-mae from the station, and alight at Shimogamojinja-mae bus stop.
Shimogamo Shrine is open all year round, from 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM on summer; and 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM on winter. Admission is free.
