The Okinawa Chutaumi Aquarium is one of the world's largest aquariums. It is generally considered to be the best aquarium in the whole country of Japan and its also in the top ten in worldwide surveys. This aquarium is located at the site of the 1975 World Fair that is referred to as the World Ocean Expo.
The highlight to a visit to the Churaumi Aquarium is the Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest in the world. It has more than 2 million gallons of water, pumped in from 350 meters offshore, held behind a acrylic window two feet thick. The main attraction of this tank must be the huge Whale Sharks, and Manta Rays, some of it were born in this tank.
There are a total of 77 tanks are on display in this aquarium.
Directly after the entrance, there is a pool which has a living starfish which is allowed for the visitors to touch.
After the pool, it leads to the must go in the list attraction, Kuroshio Tank. It has a volume capacity of 7,500 cubic meters. here you can enjoy the sight of never-before-seen groups of whale sharks, manta rays and other kinds of fishes. It is where the visitors most likely want to spend a bit of time.
After this, located just beside the tank is a high definition movie theater that shows about Okinawa's marine life.
Past the Kuroshio Tank, there are a few more interesting tank displays including an area for tiger sharks and bull sharks.
In addition to the main aquarium building, there are also outdoor pools where shows of dolphins, sea turtles and manatees can be viewed for free.
By regular buses, take highway bus number 111 from Naha to Nago Bus Terminal and transfer to departing bus number 70 to Kinen Koen Mae bus stop in front of the Ocean Expo Park.
The aquarium is open everyday from 8:30am to 8pm in summer and 8:30am to 6:30 pm in winter. It is closed during the first Wednesday and Thursday of December. The entrance fees cost 1850 yen and 1290 yen if you enter after 4:00PM.
When traveling via regular bus, you should prepare at least 2500 yen that may take 1-2 hours from the bus station.
