Odori Park is the heart of Sapporo’s festival life and the center of city outdoor activity. It is a 13-block expanse of open space spanning 1.5 kilometers from east to west.
The history of Odori Park began in 1871 when it was constructed as a large-scale firebreak to separate the downtown area to the administrative district in the north and the residential and commercial district in the south.
The park was later turned into a relaxing space for the citizens as well as a place for international exchange.
This park offers fountains, lawns, playgrounds, gardens and plenty of seating spaces where visitors can relax and enjoy the view.
At the eastern end of Odori Park stands the Sapporo TV Tower, which has an observation deck with nice views of the park and the surrounding city. In the evening, the tower is illuminated that makes it an attractive landmark.
In February Odori Park is also the main site of the Snow Festival, Sapporo’s largest tourist attraction of the year.
Odori Park is beside Odori Subway Station or a ten minute walk south of JR Sapporo Station.
The park itself is open to the public everyday with no admission fee.
If you wanted to visit the Sapporo TV tower to witness the surroundings of the city, it is open from 9:00 to 22:00 on late April to mid October and 9:30 to 21:30 from mid October to late April.
The admission fee is 720 yen.
