Mount Koya, often referred to as Koyasan, is the headquarters of the Shingon school of Buddhism also known to be Esoteric Buddhism, making it one of the best places to experience a stay in a Buddhist temple. It is located in a tranquil and peaceful wooded area of Osaka. In this highland valley rests more than 100 temples, monasteries, shrines, and pagodas.
Aside from temples, monasteries, shrines, pagodas and a chance to stay in a shukubo, the Okunoin Cemetery can also be seen here which is one of the highlights of Mt. Koya. It is one of Japan's most sacred sites with a pathway that runs between the centuries-old cedar trees, 200,00 gravestones, and statues built to honor those who have passed away.
