Located near the center of Fukushima Prefecture is this 1816 meter tall active volcano called Mount Bandai.
It is one of the 100 famous mountain of Japan because of its coronical shape like the famous Mt. Fuji and it is where it derived its nickname as Aizu-Fuji. But when an eruption occured in 1888, it changed the mountains's shape and formed the Urabandai area behind the volcano.
Climbing up to the summit is how you can enjoy the amazing scenic of the mountain. It has 6 different routes and it takes 3 to 4 hours to climb.
The easiest hiking trail is along the Bandaisan Gold Line that can only take you for 2 hours to the summit. Visitors can also pass by a hot spring to relax and rest.
If you are interested in the mountain's history and information about the eruption, you may visit the Mount Bandai Eruption Memorial Museum located in the town of Urabandai. Another atttaction is the Mount Bandai 3D World, which displays films about the mountain.
The recommended transportation is either taxi (600 or more yen) or car rental.
The hiling trails to the mountain is open to the public anytime. But the recommended time to go there is by morning until afternoon.
Mount Bandai Eruption Memorial Museum opens at 8:00 to 17:00 from April to November and 9:00 to 16"00 from December to March.
It has no closing days.
Admission fee is 600 Yen.
Mount Bandai 3D World opens at 8:00 to 17:00.
Closed on November 25 to April 11.
Admission is 800 yen.
