Manshu-in temple is an old temple founded as early as 8th century, by a monk Saicho, who is also the founder of Tendai sect.
It was originally located on the northern slope of Mount Hiei, and was relocated in the Edo Period, rebuilt with different pavilions.
Its tatami rooms are divided with very notable fine sliding doors (fusuma), which are painted by leading artists, as well as the byobu or folding screens.
The temple is best to visit in autumn, as the red maple trees in the entrance and in the garden are ablazing red.
There is a nice dry landscape garden within the temple complex. The temple is also near the equally beautiful Shugakuin Imperial Villa.
From Kyoto Station, take JR Nara Line to Tofukuji Station and transfer to Keihan Main Line. Get off at Demachiyanagi Station. From there, ride in the Eizan Railways and alight at Shugakuin Station.
The temple is open all throughout the year, with schedule 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry until 16:30). Entrance fee is 300 yen.
