Considered as a hideout place to escape Tokyo's summer day is the Lake Chuzenji located at the foot of Mount Nantai in the town of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture.
The lake is about 7 km in length and 2 km in width with a level of 1,269 meters and considered as highest lake in Japan.
The lake is said to be formed 20,000 years ago after the eruption of Mt. Nantai.
Feel the fresh breeze of the lake by strolling around the lake. But remember to ready your feet with its 25 kilometer long walking trails.
If you're not into walking, the lake can also be viewed by a sightseeing boats and by Chuzenjiko Skyline that gives you an panoramic view from the above.
From Tobu-Nikko Station, take a bus and get off at the Chuzenji-onsen stop.
Mid to late October is the month to see the beauty of the lake because of its autumn colors along the lake surroundings.
The lake can be viewed anytime. If you would like to experience the lake via sightseeing boats, it departs from the Chuzenjiko Onsen.
