Kyoto Imperial Palace or Kyoto Gosho has been the official residence of Japan's Imperial Family until 1869, when the state has moved its capital to Edo, or Tokyo in the modern day. It is situated within the vast Kyoto Imperial Park (Kyoto Gyoen).
The imperial grounds of the former palace consists of the Seiryo-den (Palace Hall) and the Kogosho (Minor Palace), enclosed by a roofed earthen wall. The lush Sento Gosho or the 22-acre garden still gives an enchanting vibe to the visitors. The large space now serves as recreational area for visitors.
Kyoto Imperial garden is near to Nijo Castle, one of the most beautiful attractions in Kyoto. The Manga Museum is also proximate to the former palace.
Kyoto Imperial Palace can be reached via ten-minute subway ride from Kyoto Station along Karasuma Subway Line; then alight at Imadegawa Station.
Kyoto Imperial Palace is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission until 4:20 PM). It is closed every Monday (or the following day if Monday is a holiday), or when the palace is used to hold some special events. Admission is free.
