The Kyoto Aquarium was newly opened at the Umejoki Park in March 2012. It is a modern designed aquarium but a little bit small compared to other aquariums in Japan. What is unique about this aquarium is the recreation zone of the aquatic environment of rivers around Kyoto and most especially the Japanese giant salamander.
The aquarium offers different exhibits that includes;
The River of Kyoto, the recreation of Kyoto's Kamo River and Yura River. It also has the Japan's largest salamander.
Furseal, where visitors can watch seals in the water.
Seal, where seals float up from the tubular pool.
Penguins, where visitors can watch penguins' behavior in land and in water.
The Sea of Kyoto, an authentic recreation of the Sea of Kyoto with various marine life.
The Fish of Coral Reef, a colorful coral reef.
The Jellyfish that displays jellyfish environment.
The Crustacean, a variety of shapes and ecosystems for shrimps and crabs, including overpowering spider crabs, the world’s largest crabs, and lobsters.
A dolphin stadium, to let the visitor see dolphins playing.
From West of Kyoto Station, the aquarium can be reached by a 15 minute walk.
The Kyoto Aquarium opening hours depends on the month of the year.
From March to November, it opens at 9:00 to 17:00 and from December to February the following year, it opens at 10:00 to 18:00.
There are irregular closing days for maintenance. (Check website for details)
Admission fee is 2050 Yen.
