Kinkakuji is a Zen temple located in Northern Kyoto. it was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.
The temple has an impressive structure with an overlooking large pond. It has burned down for several times. The present structure of the temple was rebuilt in 1955.
The first floor of the temple has a Shidden style that is used for palace buildings during the Heian period. The second floor was built in Bukken style used in samurai residences.

Kinkakuji can be accessed from Kyoto Station by direct Kyoto City Bus number 101 or 205. Alternatively, it can be faster and more reliable to take the Karasuma Subway Line to Kitaoji Station and take a taxi or bus 101, 102, 204 or 205 from there to Kinkakuji.
The temple is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is 400yen.
