Jodogahama Beach located just outside central Miyako City in Iwate prefecture, Tohoku Region. It is a beautiful beach considered as one of the best 100 beaches in Japan, a popular place for swimming and sightseeing during summer.
Along the Sanriku Coast, it is part of the Sanriku Recovery National Park. It features a blue, clear and calm ocean water, a beautiful white pebble shoreline and rocky island.
It is told that the Buddhist monk, Reikyo said that this beach invokes images of the 'Pure Land", means a Buddhist concept of paradise, whcih the beach derives its name from.
Jodogahama Beach is a best destination during summer. It attracts visitors its clear inlet from the open ocean. There is a rest house near the beach where it provides showers, toilets, rooms, a shop and a dining hall.
It also has a Visitor Center located at the main parking lot of the beach. It has a small museum that offers about the coastline and its natural features. The beach also offers a several short trails for the visitors that lead from visitor center to the beach, the boat piers and to a few viewpoints in the pine forest around the area.
Sightseeing cruise are offered around the beach. One is the 20 minute long Blue Cave Cruise located between the main parking and the beach. It offers close up view of the sharp and rocky island just opposite the beach.
Then, the Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise that uses a larger sightseeing ship that offers 40 minute long cruise. The ship visits interesting rock formations such as the towering Candle Rock and a large blowhole.
Take a bus bound to Oku Jodogashima and get off at the Jodogashima Terminal. From there, the beach will be a 10-minute walk.
Be aware that Tashirojima does not have any tourist facilities. There are small number of minshuku around Nitoda, there are also no restaurants, a very few shops or public toilets available in the island. There are a few vending machines and public toliets are located along the Nitoda waterfront ar the Fisheries Development Center. Note that the visitors are asked to carry home all the garbage that they produced in the island.
