Iriomate Island is Okinawa's second largest island and the largest island in Yaeyama island, the 19 sub-tropical islands in the deep south western waters of Okinawa Prefecture. Iriomote Island is one of Japan's most natural environments with over 90% of the island covered in thick tropical rainforest and mangrove swamps. It has a population of 2,000 people.
The island's attraction includes sea and river kayaking, fishing and sailing. Visitors can also avail tours in the beaches, snorkeling, hiking, and the most challenging: a 20 kilometer path through the interior of the island. This island is also popular in scuba diving. This island is also the home of Iriomote Yamaneko, a type of wild cat that is only found in this island. Visitors can also try river activities wherein they can ride a boat cruise in the island's largest rivers with tour guides. River cruise includes Urachi River Cruise, Nakama River Cruise and Kayak River Tours. Each cruise has a different fee. Other attractions in the island includes Hoshizuna no Hama, Yubujima Suigyu Cart Ride and Yamaneko Museum. Note that all of the attraction has different fee.
Public transport on Iriomote is rather limited. By bus, Iriomote runs 5 services per day in each direction from Shirahama to Funaura, 3 of which continue across the north coast to Ohara on the east.
Opening and closing hours of the establishments in the Minami district vary.
