Opened in 1993, The Hokkaido Museum of Northern People brings knowledge about the culture and the everyday life of the people that lived in the northern regions of the Globe such as the Ainu, the Inuit, and the Siberian people.
The resources held in the museum were collected by Dr. Osamu Baba and Dr. Sakuzaemon Kodama who are known in Japan as the key people who highlight the characteristics of northern cultures.
Things such as the clothing, food, transport and the spritual world of the northern people are the things to be discovered in this museum. It also has other exhibits about various cultures.
A corner on Okhotsk Culture is also situated in the museum.
There is a bus in the Abashiri Station but only operate once every 1-2 hours. Ride the bus and get off at the Hoppo Minzoku Hakubutsukan-mae bus stop just in front of the museum.
The museum opens at 9:00 to 17:00 from July to September and 9"30 to 16"30 from October to June the following year. It is closed during Mondays and New Year Holidays. Admission fee us 550 Yen
