Higashi Honganji (West Temple) is the counterpart of Nishi Hongan-ji in the center of Kyoto. The temple is considered as one of the largest Buddhist denominations, especially of the Jodo-Shin Sect (true Pure Land Sect).
Its main hall, called Goeido is the largest woodesn structure in Kyoto, dedicated to Shinran Shonin, the sect's founder. This is also the location of Shinran's mausoleum.
There is a small Japanese garden named Shoseisen with a pond, mostly beautiful during autumn when the colors are its peak.
You may also visit the East Temple Nishi Honganji, ideal for a whole-day pilgrimage.
The temple can be reached via a 5-minute walk north from JR Kyoto Station.
Higashi Honganji is open all year round, with no admission fee.
