In the small town of Daigo hides a magnificent beauty of Fukuroda Falls, one of the most renowned waterfalls in Japan, including Kegon and Nachi Falls.
It is also called "Yodo-no-Taki", which means the four step falls. According to Ibaraki Government's website, it actually consists of a fifth tier upstream, separately named as Namase Waterfall that can only be reached by hiking.
The falls stands 120 meters and stretches with a width of 73 meters. It is most beautiful in fall, when the autumn colors is at its peak, complementing the pearly rock walls of the falls; and in winter when the water is frozen solid like a fragile glass.
There is an elevator that can take you 44 meters above the entrance to see a better perspective of the falls.
After seeing the grandiose waterfalls, don't miss seeing the eclectic traditional shops and experiencing onsen in this quiet rural town of Daigo. While you are on your Ibaraki tour, don't forget to taste the local food like the daigo dango, grilled sweet fish, and other local delicacies.
Take the local train from the capital city Mito to Fukuroda Station on JR Suigun Line. From there, ride a route bus for 15 minutes.
Entry to this tourist spot costs 300 yen.
