Kamikochi is one of the scenic spots in Japan as it offers Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery. It is surrounded by small mountains including Nishihotakadake, Okuhotakadake, Maehotakadake and the active volcano Yakedake. This remote mountainous highland valley has been preserved in its natural state.
It serves as the popular resort in the Nagano Prefecture. It is a roughly 15 km long plateau in the Azusa River Valley. The river flows the length of the valley, filling Lake Taisho at the base of Mt. Yake. Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park has been developed with hotels, souvenir shops, mountain huts and hiking trails. However, private cars are banned here and only bus or taxi are allowed.
