The Asahiyama Zoo is a municipal zoo opened in July 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan. It is home to 700 animals of 124 different species. It is the first facility in Japan to be succeeded in the natural breeding in captivity of animals that live in cold regions.

Asahiyama Zoo is an interesting place to visit near Asahikawa. It is a place you can go spend an entire day without getting bored. It's more popular in winter as there is a special penguin parade show.
One of the highlights of your visit is the glass tunnel through the penguin pool that allows visitors to observe the birds and small glass domes in the middle of the polar bear and wolf enclosures.
Animals in display include native wildlife from Hokkaido like deer, eagles, cranes and wolves. It also has animals from across the world such as polar bears, cats, giraffes and leopards.
From Asahikawa station, take bus number 41, 42 or 47 from Asahikawa Station to Asahiyama Zoo.
Additionally, it's a 30-40-minute walk to the southeast of Kita-hinode station (Sekihoku Main Line).
The zoo opening hours may vary every month; Late April to mid October: 9:30 to 17:15 (entry until 16:00) Mid October to early November: 9:30 to 16:30 (entry until 16:00) Mid November to early April: 10:30 to 15:30 (entry until 15:00)
It is closed on New Year (December 30 to January 1) and a few days between summer and winter seasons; April 8 to 28 and November 4 to 10.
The admission fee is 820 Yen.
