With a total floor area of 19,800 square meters, Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium is considered as one of Japan's largest aquariums located just behind the Pacific Ocean in Oarai Town, Ibakari Prefecture.
The aquarium has about 68,000 sea creatures with about 500 species. It includes sharks, sunfishes, penguins, sea otter, sea lions and many more marine mammals.
The site is divided into 9 different zone with attractions.
The popular one is the World Zone where visitors can see 48 different species of sharks. Another is a zone which is exclusively for the ocean sunfish. Then, the Museum Zone where visitors can watch forms of marine life using images and specimens. There are different corner that will let the visitors learn about sea creatures like planktons, whales, sharks, ocean fish and penguins.
There is also an area that will surely enjoyed by the kids, the Kids Land. It is the largest facility in the aquarium where visitors can touch the fish.
In the 4th floor, visitors may also witness a dolphin and sea lion live show that is held four times a day.
From Nakaminato Station, take the Ibakari Bus No. 50 and get off at the stop near the aquarium.
The aquarium opens from 9:00 to 17:00 (Admission gate closes one hour before the closing time)
It is closed a few days in June and December.
