We all know how hard it is to travel with our luggage being dragged around, especially in Japan where streets are filled with people. It may be a bit difficult for you to bring your baggage with you, but don’t worry, Japan has a solution for that!
Coin lockers are the answer to a tourist’s luggage problem. If you’re done buying stuff in the shopping districts, you may leave your haul at the nearest coin locker. They can be easily found in major and minor train stations and they come in different prices and sizes.
Here are some of the common rates of a locker:
Small (¥300) – approx. 35cm x 43cm x 57cm (13in x 16in x 22in)
Medium (¥400) – approx. 57cm x 43cm x 57cm (22in x 16in x 22in)
Large (¥500) – approx. 117cm x 43cm x 57cm (44in x 16in x 22in)
You may even store your luggage overnight! But of course, an additional fee will be added to your bill. Just make sure you get them as soon as possible. Station staffs empty the lockers after three days so better secure those bags of yours.
Here’s a step-by-step process on how to leave your luggage in a coin locker:
1. Find an empty locker
2. Put in your luggage
3. Insert the amount for the locker (Coins only!)
4. Close the door and turn the key.
5. Keep the key with you at all times!
Be sure to remember where your locker is and which one of them. Secure your key as well!
