1. Ramen Restaurants
These restaurants are available is almost all countries. In Japan, every region and prefecture have different kinds of ramen. Don’t even dare missing out! Try it whenever you can.
2. Kaisendon Restaurants
Kaisendon restaurants serve raw seafood on a rice bowl. Seafood may vary according to the season but you surely won’t run out of choices here.
3. Kaitenzushi
Commonly known as conveyor belt sushi, this type of restaurant allows you to handpick your sushi that is served by a conveyor belt. You may also place your own orders via touchpad or ask the chef in the counter to make for you and again, it will be delivered to you by a conveyor belt.
4. Teppanyaki Restaurants
The chef prepares the food to be served in an iron griddle in front of you. Most teppanyaki chefs put on a great show to entertain the customers while they wait for their food.
5. Izakaya
These can be compared to pubs. Izakaya are casual drinking places. They also serve quite a number of food varieties but they focus more on drinks. Dishes are usually shared among the customers in a single table.

Shokudo are independently owned restaurants and they usually serve traditional Japanese food such as udon and curry. You can easily spot one near tourist sites.

Set meals are often served here and they usually have a fair price. One meal already has meat, rice, vegetables, and soup - a good way to recharge after a long walk!
8. Kissaten
If you’re looking for a place to satisfy your sweet tooth, this is the place to go. Most kissaten offer a large choice of desserts from fruits to ice creams, pastries, cakes, and even smoothies.
9. Yatai
You can usually find these moveable stalls during festivals or along parks in Japan. Traditional Japanese food is cheap in a yatai and it definitely has an excellent taste to it so a lot of locals prefer to eat here. Though seats are rare, it’s also an amazing experience to try eating while standing up and chatting with some company.
10. Fast food
If you’re in a hurry, you can immediately purchase a to-go pack from the nearest fast food chain. Though they may come in cheap and yummy, they are not as fresh as those cooked after you have made your order.
