Dogs are man’s best friend, as they say. True enough, Japan has a lot of loyal dog breeds which they consider close to their hearts. Here are some cute dogs you might encounter on the streets on your Japan visit:
1. Shiba

Originally bred to hunt, the Shiba Inu is considered as one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Their life expectancy ranges from 12-15 years. Their fur colors may range to black, red, cream, and even tan. They rarely bark and is often quiet.
2. Hokkaido
It is native to the place similar to its name and also very rare. They are known to withstand the cold as Hokkaido is considered the coldest prefecture in Japan. They are also very loyal to their owners and their relatively small eyes.
3. Tosa

Commonly known as a Japanese mastiff, Tosa is considered to be a rare fighting dog. They almost went extinct during the second World War but was eventually saved. Tosa makes a good watchdog.
4. Japanese Spitz

Known for their long, thick, and white fur, Japanese Spitz are known to be one of the best companion dogs. It is somehow bigger than its cousin, the Pomeranian. They are very fluffy but also low maintenance when it comes to grooming.
5. Kishu Ken

The breed was named after the Kishu region where it was first bred to hunt bears and deers. They are often quiet and their fur is usually white. A kishu may be shy but they are very loyal.
6. Kai Ken

Kai Ken are also known as Tiger dogs. They are known to be very brave and alert. It has two body types - one is the husky-bear-like type and the other is the skinnier fox type.
7. Japanese terrier

Like most terriers, Japanese terriers are very energetic and playful. Though they are a rare breed, it can only be found in Japan.
