Fuji-san or Mt. Fuji is Japan’s most majestic beauty. It can be seen from the busy streets of Tokyo but it is best to be viewed up close. The Fuji Five Lakes offers a great view of the mountain and a relaxing spot for those who are looking for a nice place to rest near the busy streets of Tokyo.
The Fuji Five Lakes consists of Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko, and Motosuko. All of them were formed when the volcano erupted hundreds of years ago. The lake is home to almost a hundred thousand residents who rely on the lakes’ resources. Among the five, three of the lakes - Saiko, Shojiko and Motosuko - are connected by underground waterways.
Lake Kawaguchi
It is the most accessible one among the five lakes. Many ryokans and hotels are built around the area where tourists can stay and have a good view of Mt. Fuji. Boat rides are also available to see the mountain up close. Events are also held nearby the lake during different seasons.
Lake Yamanaka
It stands 980 meters above sea level and the largest lake among the five. Outdoor activities can be done by the lake, especially water sports which are enjoyed by many adventure seekers around Japan.
Lake Motosu
The view of Mt. Fuji from this lake can also be seen at the back of the 1000 Yen bill. It is one of the most recommended camping grounds in Japan. There are no hotels or ryokans within the area and camping is the best option you have if you want to stick around.
Lake Sai
From the lakeside, you can also view other mountains other than Mt. Fuji. It is the least developed among the five lakes but nevertheless, you can still enjoy the majestic view of the mountain.
Lake Shoji
It is the smallest among the five lakes and locals usually fish in these regions.
The lakes are just a few hours away from Tokyo and it can be considered as a great day trip from those who want to take a break from the buzz of the city.
