Experiencing the traditional Japanese lifestyle is probably one of the things in a foreigner’s bucket list when going to Japan. For those who want to check it off their lists prefer to stay at a Ryokan or a traditional Japanese inn.
Traditional Japanese inns or ryokan date back to the Edo period. It was a place to stay for travelers who have journeyed far and want a good rest. Now, even with its high price, foreigners still patronize many ryokan to be able to try the Japanese lifestyle.
It is common to see tatami mats and communal baths in a ryokan. There are also no beds as they use futon in sleeping. Sliding doors and windows are also common. Most ryokan also serve native Japanese cuisine that you wouldn’t find in supermarkets or normal bars around Japan.
Most ryokan visitors might feel intimidated with its atmosphere, it being too rigid. One must also exude proper etiquette when entering a ryokan such as taking your shoes off before stepping on a tatami mat, washing properly before entering a communal bath or onsen, and even greeting your neighbors when you see them around.
An average ryokan can cost 15,000-25,000 Yen per night per person. Expensive as it may seem, if you really want to live like the Japanese do, it wouldn’t hurt to try for a night!
