Japan already has many islands and they keep on making more. Yes, making. When you visit Tokyo, make sure you visit Odaiba - one of Japan’s artificial islands. Odaiba is one of the places in Metropolitan Tokyo where the sea is accessible - the other being Yokohama.
Odaiba was originally intended to defend Edo from threats coming from the sea. The order to build it came from Egawa Hidetatsu for the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1853. The name Odaiba means “platform site,” as a platform for a cannon battery was located in the islands before. The initial plan was to create 11 islands but only five were finished.
Many plans have been made to improve Odaiba. In the 1990s, it eventually became a tourist spot and a commercial center as hotels and other businesses started to build their offices here.
There are many unique things to do in Odaiba, which makes it attracting to a lot of visitors. The bridge connecting Odaiba and mainland Tokyo, Rainbow bridge, is also a must-see attraction, especially at night.
