Kodo is the art of appreciating Japanese incense. It can be translated as the way of the incense and is one of the three classical Japanese art of refinement. It is similar to aromatherapy wherein the fragrance of wood is inhaled for pleasure and relaxation. It is said that kodo is a bridge to the spiritual world.
The kodo is said to have ten physical and psychological benefits namely:
Sharpens the senses
Purifies the mind and body
Removes mental or spiritual "pollutants" (kegare)
Promotes alertness Heals feelings of loneliness
Creates a feeling of harmony even under stress
Even in abundance, is not overwhelming Satisfies, even in small quantities
Does not decay even over centuries Does no harm even if used every day
Etiquettes must be followed when doing the kodo, as much as any art and tradition in Japan. There is also a game wherein the players must distinguish and differentiate the scents based on memory. Another game is guessing what is the material that produces the scent.
