When winter comes in Japan, it can be really freezing. Some prefer to stay indoors during the season and enjoy the company of a kotatsu.
A kotatsu is a low wooden table covered with a futon. It usually has a heater underneath to keep your feet warm. Some even sleep inside a kotatsu during the cold season!
They have been around since the 1400s. Traditional kotatsu usually use coal pits that was built-in on the floor. The table is placed on the tatami mat then a pit is dug underneath to house the coal pit and let your feet comfortably rest. Modern kotatsu have electric heaters attached underneath the tabletop.
During the winter, the whole family gathers to feel the warmth of the kotatsu while eating, chatting, and spending time together. It has been said that, "once under the kotatsu, all of your worries slip away as a familiar warmth takes over and you become completely relaxed."
Some restaurants also offer dining in a kotatsu to keep their customers warm while waiting for the food to served. Alongside with it, tea is also served.
If you’re planning to stay in Japan for the winter, be sure that the home you’ll be staying at has a kotatsu or else you’ll be freezing to death!
