If you’re searching for a cheap but cute souvenir to amuse your friends when you go home from your trip to Japan, you will surely love gachapon.
What is a gachapon?
A gashapon is a coin-operated toy dispenser. Though it’s price may vary, it’s relatively cheap compared to other toys. The price may range from 100-500 Yen, depending on the type of toy you’re eyeing on. The usual stuff you can randomly get from a gashapon are figurines and phone straps.
Why is it called a gachapon?
The name comes from the sound the machine creates. Gacha when it is the handle to get the toy is twisted and pon when the toy is finally released.
What can you get from a gachapon?
A lot! You might spend hours for finding the perfect toy that you want and still want more. Some gachapon have watches, mirrors, mini-swords, wands, figurines, phone straps, music boxes, mini-containers, erasers, towels, and even underwear! You can rarely pick what you can get from a gachapon and it might take a few tries to get what you really want. But trying a gachapon and getting your toy is an interesting experience.
Where can you find a gachapon?
They are everywhere! There is even a mall in Akihabara which is home to almost 500 gachapon machines. You can usually find a machine inside or outside an anime shop. There are also some machines in convenience stores and groceries but it is highly recommended to go to places where there are more than 10 gachapon machines so that you can choose what to get!
