Visiting Japan and you've already done everything in your bucket list? Well not to worry, here's a new alternative to your trip -- why not visit some place haunted? If you're feeling brave enough (or if you want to drag a friend along with you for a new experience), try dropping by these places when you have the time. You'll have something new to tell your family and friends once you get back.
1. Old Chusetsu Tunnel
- There are many dangerous tunnels in Japan, one of them is Old Chusetsu Tunnel located in Fukuoka. This abandoned tunnel is a popular place to explore due to its infamous murders that happened throughout the years. Some say that you may hear an eerie voice telling you to stop walking once you're inside. Nobody really knows what waits for you at the end of the tunnel, though.
2. Himuro Mansion
Himuro Mansion is said to have been the location of one of the most gruesome murders in Japanese history. Its been said that several people were found murdered as part of an occult ritual gone wrong. Since then, many hauntings have happened in that house such as blood spatters appearing on the wall or dead bodies of explorers were allegedly found on the property with rope marks around their wrists.
3. Aokigahara Forest
- Resting in Mount Fuji's shadow, this forest lies a shrouded by death, the world's second most popular suicide location. Also known as Kuroi Jukai, meaning "Black Sea of Trees", Aokigahara forest is a dense wood of tangled roots,intertwined branches and impenetrable undergrowth. The Aokigahara Forest has always been a dark place; sources say that in the 19th century, it was a place of ubasute – the practice of abandoning an elderly relative to die. Vengeful spirits are said to haunt the forest.
4. Akasaka Mansion
The Akasaka Mansion, better known as Hotel MyStays Akasaka, is listed as one of the most haunted places to stay in Japan. Most of the paranormal activity happens in Building 1. What kind of bizarre happenings would guests experience? Some say that they've witnessed apparitions at the foot of their beds, ghostly mists flowing from the air vents, or lights flickering on and off.
5. Sankei Hospital
This location happened to be a mental hospital that was abandoned in 1977 due to the eruption of Mount Usu. All doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and 230 patients were relocated to a nearby school and the hospital was untouched since then. It stood still for a few years after the volcanic eruption until the building itself finally collapsed a year later.
6. Sunshine 60
- Located in the Ikebukuro area of Tokyo, Sunshine 60 lies within a sprawling complex of upscale shopping buildings collectively known as Sunshine City. Although in modern times Sunshine 60 is an impressive, thrumming center of shopping and entertainment, it also has a dark past. The site where this urban entertainment complex now sits was once the location of the notorious Sugamo Prison. Originally built in 1895, by the 1930s Sugamo Prison was mostly used for the incarceration of political prisoners, including dissenters, anarchists, communists, and spies.
