Women had been, for the longest time, just a shadow behind a man. However, as the days pass by, more and more women are proving that they are more than just decoration in a kingdom ruled by men. And the world of anime is no exception.
Who would ever thought that anime characters can serve as inspiration for girl power? Here are 5 of the coolest girls in anime!
Shuurei Kou of Colorcloud Palace
“Make-up is a woman’s war paint. When you head into battle, you must wear it. That way, you can’t cry. If you cry, your make-up will run.” - Shuurei Kou
Colorcloud Palace or Saiunkoku Monogatari is an anime that deserves more attention--particularly because of its strong and gutsy protagonist, Shuurei Kou.
To save the country of Saiunkoku from the emperor’s lousy governance, Shuurei became his pretend-concubine to teach and inspire him to do better. But this did not last for long as Shuurei had another dream, which was to become a government official. After the emperor decided to let women take the civil service exams, Shuurei aced the test and became a governor of the Brown Province.
Major Motoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell
No matter what the era is, there will always be a strong woman in it.
Ghost in the Shell would not be the action-packed series that it is without its main character, Major Motoko Kusanagi.
She is a cyborg who is the field commander of Public Security Section 9. Any computer specialist would be jealous of Major’s hacking skills, while any soldier would want to snag her smart military tactics.
Mikasa Ackerman of Attack on Titan
“That moment my body stopped shaking. From that moment, I can perfectly control myself. I thought I can do anything.” - Mikasa Ackerman
The worst and most traumatic events in our lives can bring out an unusual strength we never knew we were capable of.
This is what happened to Mikasa Ackerman, whose parents were killed by human traffickers. Because of this loss, she was doing her best to protect her friends, whom she treated as family. To keep a close eye on her friend Eren, Mikasa even enlisted in the military and joined the Survey Corps.
Lady Oscar of Rose of Versailles
Just because this anime is from the 1970’s, and set in the 18th century France, doesn’t mean it lacks a strong independent heroine.
In fact, fictional character Oscar de Jarjayes is a military leader who protects those who are important to her.
Named and raised as a man, Oscar gained the strength and skills to be the leader of the Palace Guards during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The anime is about her realization that her country was not being governed like it should have been. Lady Oscar is a testament to how women can hold positions that are usually for men, and do a spectacular job at it.
San of Princess Mononoke
“I am not afraid to die.” - San
San’s parents were attacked by the wolf goddess Moro, when she was just a baby. This was due to her parents damaging the forest. To appease Moro, the parents gave her San and ran away. Raised by wolves, San became a fierce girl who behaved just like the rest of the pack. While her fighting skills are enough to make people think she is a strong woman, her mission to protect the forest and the animals that live in it make her even more admirable.
