Square watermelons are grown notably in the Japanese city of Zentsuji, Kanagawa Prefecture. They are meant for ornamental means and not edible due to its bland taste and unripeness. The farmers harvest and send the cube watermelons before they ripe to prolong shelflife whereas if they are harvested ripe, the fruits would only last for a week.
Square watermelons are expensive as they cost $100 because of the decorative, ornamental value and the meticulous process of farming. The farmers make the square watermelons by placing the half-grown fruit inside a polycarbonate enclosure with lock and hinges. Before the fruit gets ripe, the fruit will be taken out and shipped in boxes with ribbon, trademark seal and manual instruction for placing the ribbon lace on top of the square watermelon.
