The officials of a local railway company and their patrons gave tribute to their stationmaster, a cat named Tama. The 16-year old cat died of a heart failure on June 22, 2015, and was elevated into a goddess at a funeral the Sunday after.
Wakayama Electric Railway President Mitsunobu Kojima thanked the cat for her achievement and said Tama will be enshrined as "honorable eternal stationmaster" at a nearby cat shrine in August. He added the cat as their “savior” when she came at the Kishi station in 2007, at the time wherein the local Kishihgawa line was near bankrupt and the station unmanned after losing their last staff.
